Registered Behavior Technician

To become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), you need to complete several steps outlined by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Here’s a step-by-step guide from start to finish:

Step 1: Meet Eligibility Requirements

Be at least 18 years old.
Have a high school diploma or GED.
Pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check.

Step 2: Complete a 40-Hour RBT Training Course

This training covers Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles, ethics, and practical skills.
You can take the course online or in-person through BACB-approved providers.
The training must be completed within 180 days.

Step 3: Pass the RBT Competency Assessment

This is a hands-on evaluation conducted by a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst).
You’ll demonstrate skills like data collection, reinforcement techniques, and behavior intervention strategies.
The assessment must be completed within 90 days before applying for certification.

Step 4: Apply for RBT Certification

Submit an application to the BACB.
Pay the application fee (varies by provider).
Once approved, you’ll receive an authorization to test.

Step 5: Pass the RBT Exam

The exam consists of multiple-choice questions covering six domains:
1. Measurement
2. Assessment
3. Skill Acquisition
4. Behavior Reduction
5. Documentation & Reporting
6. Professional Conduct & Scope of Practice

You’ll take the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center.

Step 6: Maintain Your Certification

RBTs must receive ongoing supervision from a BCBA.
Renew certification annually by completing a renewal competency assessment.
